Job Description

Summary

The Long Island University College of Veterinary Medicine (LIU-CVM) in Brookville, New York, invites applications from self-directed, innovative and motivated individuals for a full-time, clinical-track or tenure-track faculty position in shelter medicine. The position may be filled as Assistant, Associate or Full Professor depending upon qualifications. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, missiondriven team dedicated to educating the next generation of veterinary professionals. We are looking for an enthusiastic educator who thrives at the intersection of teaching, clinical service, and community engagement.

The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to work within the North Shore Animal League of America (NSALA), described as one of the world’s largest, most comprehensive no-kill rescue and adoption organizations (https//www.animalleague.org). Supported by a team of exceptional professionals, the NSALA is a world leader in setting best practices for adoption and performs >38,000 exams annually. Between the NSALA and other shelter program partners of LIU-CVM, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to build a center of excellence in veterinary shelter medicine.

Successful candidates will be engaged in the College’s educational, research and service activities. The primary responsibility is to direct the LIU-CVM shelter medicine fourth year clinical rotation at NSALA. The typical rotation has five to six 4th year students. The chosen candidate will be responsible for educating the students in all things related to shelter medicine (practicing shelter medicine, conducting dental prophylaxis and oral surgery, basic surgeries, wellness visits, etc.). Some didactic lectures and or case discussions are anticipated to complement clinical experience, as needed. Rotations through other NSALA services will be expected, as directed by the NSALA director, to contribute to NSALA collaborations. Successful candidates are expected to promote the LIU-CVM and NSALA missions of enhancing veterinary medical education through a commitment to teaching, academic excellence, and service to a variety of stakeholders.

The majority of time will be spent at NSALA and thus the NSALA director will be the primary director of this position on a daily basis. The LIU supervisor will be the department head of Clinical Sciences at LIUCVM. Other duties may include creating innovative learning resources, committee service participation (such as admissions, curriculum, research, etc.) and student mentorship. Should the applicant desire a tenured position, all tenure track faculty contribute to the overall research and scholarly goals of the College of Veterinary Medicine and are expected to develop independent or collaborative research in the field of shelter medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a DVM or equivalent degree, and expertise in shelter medicine. Specialty board certification/eligibility by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) in Shelter Medicine or equivalent is preferred. The candidate will interact well with University administration, the veterinary education community, faculty, students and alumni.

LIU is an equal opportunity employer. LIU is committed to extending equal opportunity in employment to all qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals regardless of race, color, religion, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital or parental status, national origin, ethnicity, citizenship status, veteran or military status, age, disability, or any other basis protected by applicable laws. Hiring is contingent on eligibility to work in the United States.
