Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Long Island University (LIU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine (LCVM). This is an exceptional opportunity to lead one of the nation's newest and most innovative colleges of veterinary medicine as it enters its next phase of growth, excellence, and national prominence. The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and provides visionary leadership to advance excellence in veterinary education, scholarship, clinical partnerships, research, service, and innovation. The Dean will lead a highly collaborative community of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners while promoting an inclusive culture that prepares graduates who are both career ready and future ready to lead the veterinary profession. The successful candidate will embrace innovation, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, support faculty and student success, advance research and scholarly activity, strengthen partnerships across the veterinary profession, animal health industries, and other stakeholders, and position the College as a national leader in veterinary education. The Dean reports to the President of Long Island University and serves as a member of the University's senior academic leadership team.


LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES


Strategic Vision and Institutional Leadership

The Dean will:

  • Provide visionary leadership that advances the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Lead development and implementation of the College's strategic plan while identifying emerging opportunities that position the College for national distinction.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Represent the College within the University and to local, national, and international stakeholders.
  • Sustain and build productive relationships with veterinary organizations, industry, government agencies, alumni, donors, philanthropic partners, and the community.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration across Long Island University.
  • Champion a culture of inclusion and well-being throughout the College community.

Academic Excellence

The Dean will provide leadership for:

  • A high-quality, integrated Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum that meets the evolving needs of the veterinary profession and society.
  • Educational innovation utilizing emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, simulation, digital learning, and other evolving and emerging educational approaches and technologies.
  • Competency-based education.
  • Pioneering  outcomes-focused assessment.
  • Continuous curriculum review and improvement.
  •  Establishing expectations for achievement of faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship, mentoring, and service.
  • Development of graduate education, research opportunities, and continuing professional education.

Accreditation and Quality Assurance

The Dean will:

  • Ensure achievement of all standards for accreditation.
  • Lead preparation for accreditation reviews and reporting.
  • Foster a culture of continuous assessment and quality improvement.
  • Utilize educational analytics and performance metrics to guide strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with all university, state, and federal requirements.

Faculty Leadership

The Dean will:

  • Lead recruitment, development, mentorship, and retention of a world-class faculty.
  • Enable faculty success in teaching, scholarship, leadership, innovation, and clinical excellence.
  • Encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
  • Support professional development and leadership development opportunities.
  • Foster a collegial culture that values collaboration, transparency, integrity, and shared governance.
  • Model inclusive team-based healthcare delivery by establishing and leading a highly functioning team.

Student Success

The Dean will:

  • Lead student recruitment, retention, academic success, wellness, and professional development.
  • Foster a student-centered educational environment.
  • Lead and development academic programs that ensure future-ready graduates.
  • Enable development of future veterinary leaders committed to service, professionalism, communication, and lifelong learning.
  • Lead and support initiatives that enhance student engagement and belonging.

Research, Innovation, and Clinical Partnerships

The Dean will:

  • Lead advancement of research, scholarship, and innovation throughout the College.
  • Strengthen partnerships with veterinary practices, specialty hospitals, industry, government agencies, animal welfare organizations, and biomedical research institutions.
  • Expand opportunities for experiential and distributive clinical education.
  • Promote translational research and interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Position LCVM as a national leader in veterinary educational innovation.

Advancement and External Relations

The Dean will:

  • Partner with University Advancement to increase philanthropic support.
  • Cultivate relationships with alumni, donors, foundations, corporations, and other friends of the College.
  • Serve as the primary ambassador for the College.
  • Enhance the College's visibility, reputation, and national influence.
  • Promote partnerships that support education, research, innovation, and community engagement.

Financial and Administrative Leadership

The Dean will:

  • Establish a culture of accountability and provide responsible stewardship of College resources.
  • Develop and manage strategic and operational budgets.
  • Ensure effective planning, resource allocation, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Lead recruitment and development of administrative leaders.
  • Promote operational excellence and continuous organizational improvement.
  • Work effectively with University Support Services.
Required Qualifications

    The successful candidate will possess outstanding academic credentials and demonstrated leadership success, including:

    • DVM, VMD, or equivalent veterinary degree.
    • Eligibility for appointment as a tenured Professor.
    • Record of distinguished academic achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service.
    • Significant senior leadership experience in veterinary medical education or a comparable academic environment.
    • Demonstrated success leading complex organizations through strategic planning and organizational growth.
    • Experience with accreditation and continuous quality improvement.
    • Strong record of faculty development and mentorship.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
    • Demonstrated commitment to collaborative leadership and shared governance.
    • Demonstrated commitment to a culture of inclusion and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications

    Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

    • Advanced graduate degree (PhD or equivalent).
    • Veterinary specialty board certification.
