Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities: 

The Orientation Leader (OL) is a student leader who serves as a welcoming and supportive peer mentor for incoming Long Island University students and their families during Orientation programs and Admissions events. OLs play a vital role in creating a positive first impression of LIU by helping new students feel connected, informed, and excited to join Shark Nation.

OLs are responsible for assisting with Orientation programming, facilitating small group discussions and activities, supporting event logistics, and serving as a resource to new students throughout the transition process. This position is designed for enthusiastic student leaders who are passionate about student engagement, school spirit, and helping others.

Key Responsibilities: 

·       Welcome and assist new students and families during First Year, Transfer, and Graduate Orientation programs

·       Serve as a positive representative of Long Island University

·       Facilitate icebreakers, group discussions, and engagement activities

·       Assist with event set-up, check-in, and event management

·       Provide accurate information regarding campus resources, student involvement, academic support, and campus life

·       Support the Center for Student Success & Coaching throughout the year at Admissions Open Houses and Admitted Students Days

·       Help foster an inclusive, welcoming, and engaging environment for all students

·       Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and strong communication

Education Requirements: 

·       Must be a currently enrolled LIU student in good academic and disciplinary standing

Qualified applicants will have: 

·       Strong communication and interpersonal skills

·       Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

·       Positive attitude, flexibility, and enthusiasm for helping others

·       Demonstrated involvement in campus life and student engagement preferred

Required Dates & Commitments: 

·       Leadership experience

·       Public speaking or presentation experience

·       Ability to engage and connect with diverse groups of students

·       Problem-solving and customer service skills

Required Dates & Commitments: 

All OLs are required to attend the following dates:

·       Orientation Leader Training: August 24th – August 28th

·       First Year Move In: August 29th

·       New Student Orientation: August 30th – August 31st

·       Transfer & Graduate Student Orientation: September 1st

Please note that attendance Orientation dates are mandatory.

Working Conditions: 

Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to properly execute the position’s role. Travel to/from other LIU campuses for the facilitation of training, meetings and other university functions is required.
