Job Description
The Director of Operations works collaboratively to support operational functions and facilities management in alignment with institutional priorities. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), this role is responsible for driving operational excellence, overseeing facilities planning and maintenance, and leading cross-functional initiatives that enhance efficiency, safety, and organizational effectiveness.
The Director partners with senior leadership to align operations and infrastructure with long-term institutional goals while ensuring high-quality service delivery across departments.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of operational strategies aligned with institutional priorities
- Oversee day-to-day operational functions to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and service excellence
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and performance metrics to optimize operations
- Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to ensure continuity of operations
Facilities Management & Planning
- Provide oversight of facilities operations, including maintenance, space planning, capital projects, and vendor management
- Ensure facilities are safe, compliant, and aligned with regulatory and institutional standards
- Partner with internal stakeholders on space utilization, renovations, and long-term campus or organizational planning
- Oversee preventative maintenance programs and sustainability initiatives
Project & Initiative Oversight
- Direct and manage complex, cross-functional operational and facilities-related projects
- Establish project governance, timelines, and accountability structures
- Monitor progress, budgets, and outcomes; report on key performance indicators to senior leadership
- Ensure successful execution of strategic initiatives led by the COO
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as a key liaison between the COO’s office and internal departments, external partners, and vendors
- Partner with operations and facilities staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
- Facilitate communication, alignment, and execution across departments
- Support executive decision-making through data analysis, reporting, and operational insights
Process Improvement & Organizational Effectiveness
- Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve organizational systems
- Implement tools and best practices to enhance operational performance
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 7+ years of progressive experience in operations, facilities management, or related roles
- Demonstrated experience managing complex projects and cross-functional initiatives
- Strong organizational, time management and strategic planning skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
Preferred:
- Experience in higher education or similarly complex organizational environments
- Experience managing budgets, vendors, and operations
