Job Description

Summary

The Roc Nation School seeks passionate students to guide high schoolers in the Early Scholars Program as they take LIU classes in sports and music. Mentors play a critical role in providing the guidance and encouragement these students need to succeed as they transition into their college careers.

About the Roc Nation Early Scholars Program

The Roc Nation Early Scholars Program provides high school students the opportunity to earn up to twelve college credits and experience university life at LIU Brooklyn at no cost. Our mission is to close the college completion gap by preparing students for careers in sports, music, and entertainment through experiential learning and immersive industry experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular check-ins with Early Scholars to provide support, such as escorting students to IT for portal access and assisting with course registration.
  • Provide academic support as needed, helping students navigate their coursework and responsibilities.
  • Join program outings to facilitate student participation and safety during immersive industry experiences such as Broadway shows and sports events.  
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment to help students integrate into the university community.
  • Serve as a positive role model for high school students participating in ESP.
  • Encourage students to participate in university events.

Time Commitment

Mentors are expected to support their mentees for the duration of the student's time in the program. This includes weekly meetings, attending workshops, and participating in mandatory orientation and training. Each Mentor will have approximately 10 mentees and spend about eight hours per week throughout the semester, with an overall limit of 230 hours per academic year.

Education Requirements

  • Mentors must be enrolled and in good standing at LIU, demonstrating strong academic performance through their GPA and classroom engagement.
  • Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience
  • Passion for sports, music, or entertainment with a desire to help high school students succeed.
  • Prior experience in mentoring, tutoring, or leadership roles is preferred.  
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to relate to high school students and foster a supportive environment.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Work Environment

This position is located on LIU’s Brooklyn Campus and may include responsibilities during weekend activities.

The statement should discuss their interest in giving back to their community and helping high school students from diverse backgrounds succeed in college and future careers in sports and music.
