Job Description

Position Summary:

The School of Health Professions at LIU Post seeks a full-time, non-tenure track candidate to teach and assure appropriate educational opportunities in our Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology Program. The candidate will report to the Program Director, Veterinary Technology Program.

This is a full-time position which includes teaching during the Fall and Spring semesters with a workload of 24 credits. During summer there will be some faculty meetings for preparation for the upcoming Fall semesters. During the summer there will not be any teaching responsibilities unless some remediation classes are offered. Part of the teaching responsibilities include assessment, working toward student success and retention, evaluation of programmatic outcomes, and inspiring all aspects of professionalism in class and off-campus. Subject areas will include one or more areas of veterinary technology education, from the introductory to the advanced level.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Classroom and laboratory teaching
  • Work with program Advisory Committees and program director in reviewing the program's syllabi to ensure consistency with the institutional mission and that textbooks, teaching methods and techniques, course content, course and program outcomes, and assessment procedures are appropriate and consistent within the program and meet or exceed program accreditation standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical records on each student.
  • Participate in the advising of students in relationship to clinical practice.
  • Cooperate in improving and promoting the image of the program and the school through effective recruiting, public relations, and marketing activities.
  • Assume special responsibilities and/or serve on committees as assigned by the Dean of the School of Health Professions and Nursing. There may be other duties as assigned by the program Director and/or the Dean of the School.
  • Work closely with the Program Director, as well as other allied health professionals.
  • Local travel to clinics where students are completing externship at times throughout the semester.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current New York State licensed Veterinary Technologist or current Licensed DVM degree.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Technology considered with strong teaching and clinical experience. 
  • Teaching experience, on either a junior college or senior college level, in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program; familiarity with CVTEA requirements and associated teaching methodology is essential
  • Three or more years’ experience as a veterinary technologist in a clinical or research setting; 
  • The ideal candidate should have a thorough knowledge of clinical veterinary technology.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (both verbal and written) 
  • The position calls for the ability to work independently and dependably.
  • The candidate is expected to obtain all continuing education required for maintaining current licensure in the state of New York.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree completed or in progress strongly preferred
  • Additional NAVTA’s VTS specialty certifications 
  • Experience supervising other technicians and/or student externs
